Bola Tinubu, national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and John Oyegun, national chairman of the ruling party were among APC leaders hosted by President Muhammadu Buhari to dinner on Wednesday.
The dinner started around 8:30pm at the new banquet hall of the presidential villa in Abuja.
Bisi Akande, former governor of Osun; Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo; Segun Oni, former governor of Ekiti state; Kayode Fayemi, minister of mines and steel development, were among the dignitaries at the event.
Governors at the meeting were Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo) and Tanko Al-Makura (Nasarawa).
Some members of the national assembly, ministers and stakeholders from the zone also attended the dinner.
Before journalists were excused from the meeting, it was announced that Fayemi and Tinubu would make brief remarks before the dinner, while Odigie-Oyegun and the president will speak at the end.
The meeting is believed to be connected with the forthcoming governorship election of Ekiti State and the fallout of the just concluded contentious primary of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Earlier on Wednesday, Oni, Fayemi’s major competitor, had raised concerns over his treatment by some leaders of the party and mooted the possibility of leaving the party.
Following the president’s meeting with the South-West leaders, he met with all aspirants in the Ekiti governorship APC primary, and took a group photograph including all of them.
This was confirmed by his Personal Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad, via his Twitter handle. He tweeted, “A historic photograph; President @MBuhari in a group photo with candidate and all aspirants of the APC in the July 2018 Ekiti State Governorship Elections, after Mr. President’s dinner meeting with APC’s South West leaders”.
