I Could Have Become Nigeria’s President In 1993&2003- Atiku

Former Vice-President and 2019 presidential hopeful Atiku Abubakar says he is not desperate to become Nigeria’s number one citizen.

Atiku, who was Nigeria’s number two citizen during Olusegun Obasanjo’s reign, made this known in an interview with BBC Hausa.

According to him, his political history is not tied to desperate acts.

“If I am desperate, I wouldn’t have stepped down for M.K.O Abiola in 1993 presidential race,” he said.

“In 1993, I contested with M.K.O Abiola. I later withdrew from the race. In 1999, I was elected a governor of Adamawa state, then invited to be Nigeria’s vice president, under Olusegun Obasanjo.

“I could have become Nigeria’s president in 2003 when virtually, all the state governors then, rallied support for me to contest which I declined. I am not desperate to be president as some Nigerians view it.”

Atiku, who recently dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also disclosed that he wants to become President in order to tackle the economic woes of the country.

According to him, as a Vice President for 8 years, he saw many ways to fix the problems of the country, adding he could not do anything unless in the position of a president.

“If elected as President, I will woo investors and harmonize the lingering crisis of foreign exchange in the Central Bank of Nigeria.

“You cannot woo investors into this country while there is varying exchange rate of foreign currency. So, I would try to harmonise and subsidize exchange rate for ease of doing business for the investors.

“Though the current government is trying to woo investors, it is not providing an enabling environment in order to run their business smoothly.

“As an entrepreneur, I have experience of creating job opportunities for the youth. So, I will open more opportunities for the youth to be developed,” he added. Atiku
